Title: Guilty Pleasures
Post by: Kekerusey on August 31, 2016, 10:31:02 PM
OK,

I thought I would start a thread about guilty pleasures, that is to say things you enjoy you're either embarrassed about or clearly at odds with just about everyone else. It is into that latter category that my first guilty pleasure falls:

The Science Fantasy film, "John Carter" which everyone, as far as I can tell, hated (even though it got 6 plus on IMDB) ... in part it may be because I've read the book by ERB which has to be some of the lousiest writing ever given that he just recycles the same "boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again" story over and over not just on a per book basis but even within each book. ERB was imaginative, it's true, but all of his stories are, broadly speaking, the same. In that sense the film was extremely good because it actually told the story "A Princess of Mars" fairly faithfully, perhaps even better ...

... besides I just loved that stupid dog creature, Woola.

I'd have watched a sequel with no problem and it passed the acid "Rocks Test" ... I have it on BluRay :)

My latest movie guilty pleasure is Crimson Peak:

Visually it's gorgeous, but the story is horribly written -- it's a snarl of giant plot holes and absurdities from end to end.  But the acting is good (tho it does nothing to save it) and it has Tom Hiddleston.

Aw, you thought of me.  ;)

I don't feel guilty or embarrassed for anything that I like, though I am told I should feel bad for watching all manner of bad movies. I know they are bad, but I like to watch them anyway. I'm not talking about the recent influx of the SyFy intentionally bad movies, I mean like the old times when either budget, acting or whatever else besides a director's vision made a disaster out something. Troma, I think are the originator's of the new SyFy movie making model, but I still like watching a bunch of those movies.

One that still stands out is a movie called "Omega Doom" which I think was stolen from an old Samurai movie (much like the magnificent and almost all of Clint Eastwood's westerns), or an anime. It's about androids surviving after a huge war. There are no humans in the whole movie. There is one scene where there was supposed to be a special effect, but I guess they didn't get it done because you can still see the green that was supposed to be replaced. I think it would have been better if they had a bit more of a budget, but I still liked it.

Battlefield Earth, a movie based on a book written by the founder of Scientology. I watched it a couple of times. Maybe three times. :couchhide:

It's just so horribly bad it's good. Travolta is hilarious.

There is that and actually I was going to mention it myself, not so much the film (I've only seen that once) but the book which I have read quite a few times. I'm told it (the book) is a manual for scientology but I'm afraid I just don't see it ... it isn't the best written in the world (L Ron Hubbard was a mediocre SF writer and that's being kind, I suspect it was ghost written though) but makes up for it by being somewhat massive in scope, space opera though not at its best.

OK, here's one for the books.  My brother, an artist, refused to speak to me for a week after I admitted liking this movie.  I read somewhere that the cast and crew knew it was so bad that the day they wrapped it up they all went to Mexico to get drunk.  What can I say?  It makes me laugh in the good way.

Are bad movies really a "guilty pleasure"? I proudly talk about the ones I've watched that are so bad they're good :) I can recommend a few:

- The Room (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Room_(film)): So this guy named Tommy Wiseau decided he wanted to be a movie director despite having no experience or talent. He  wrote, directed, and starred in it, then posted a huge billboard over the LA Freeway for 5 years advertising it:

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fphotos1.blogger.com%2Fblogger%2F1291%2F1349%2F1600%2Ftheroom2.jpg&hash=3bf4b1158f1754e4d77a0550f2ef3f43db9d4e38)

It's supposed to be a love-triangle drama, but no one can act, subplots come and go with no explanation, the sex scenes are anatomically impossible...just trust me on this, see it

- Turkish Star Wars. Seriously, a bunch of Turks in the 80s made their own sci-fi "movie" while literally ripping scenes from Star Wars and the music from Indiana Jones and a bunch of props they found lying around (mummies, roman armor, etc). Now on YouTube with English subtitles:

- Zardoz. A trippy sci-fi that has Sean Connery, who was trying to break the "James Bond" typecasting by dressing as a porn-star version of He-Man. It starts with a floating head extolling the virtues of the gun and the evils of the penis. It goes downhill from there:

All of Clint's movies? I'm glad I don't know the originals coz I like a bit of Clint especially, talking of another guilty pleasure, "Firefox" which is really sh** and "America Save The World (Again)" but we still likes it my precious.

Thx for the recommendation, I'll look out for "Omega Doom" :)

Not always. I mean I'm happy to discuss bad movies but I was kinda shooting for those things (inc. movies) you know are bad, embarrassingly so, but you still watch them anyway. I suppose a good general example would be some kind of awful film/book/cd you loved as a kid, you know now why it was absolute cr** but you still want to watch/read/listen to it anyway.

An example for me might be Gerry Anderson's "UFO" which, although it had some very good moments, dated so rapidly it became embarrassing. "Space 1999" was even worse.

It has nothing to do with appreciation. One should not give a rats ass what others think. If you don't like the music I like, I don't care. If you don't like the movies I like, I don't care. I'm not like everybody else. I will not like or conform because the mass of sheep can not think for themselves, and live to comply with their pathetic self defined state of normalcy. To hell with them!

Now, I mean no disrespect to you, just stating how I feel about the subject.

Quote from: No one on September 02, 2016, 02:00:18 AMIt has nothing to do with appreciation.

Fair enough ... clearly I disagree.

Eraserhead?
I haven't seen that one, though I have heard of it. Just never got around to watching it.

It's been years, but it was the strangest thing I've ever seen.
I'll try to get around to it soon then.

I watched this yesterday whilst on my exercise bike:

In short some very good actors (the trio of good guys being by far the worst ... I read somewhere that the acting of Sam J. Jones, the titular character, was so bad they had to completely redub his voice) doing some very bad acting to an awful script against dubious effects. I'm surprised there weren't any wobbly walls as well.

It's cheesy, it's camp and, with the Queen soundtrack, it's absolutely f***ing great! The best scene in my not so humble opinion is the American Football bit in Ming's throne room, just brilliant! Yet really, really crap!

Go Flash Go, Go Flash Go, Go Flash Go ...

When I was a teenager I would listen to the pop rock band Creed. And like it.

Nickleback as well. I'm almost ashamed of that one.

The very first 45 (vinyl record format) single pop song I ever bought was: Eddie Rabbitt - I Love A Rainy Night. I think the second record I bought was: JUICE NEWTON - Queen Of Hearts. I loved Kenny Rogers and Michael McDonald. I think I'll stop right now.  :run!:

I've never understood why people dislike Nickleback, no more than I understand why people dislike the Star Wars prequels.

I don't know much about Creed but I did like the one song I ever heard from them:

Only thing I ever heard by Kenny Rogers was "Ruby" which I pretty much just thought was funny. As for Mr. McDonald, I used to love late 70's funk so yeah, I kinda regard "Ya Mo Be There" as a classic dance tune.

In its (my) defence he seems to be the guest singer of the main artist, James Ingram.

Whatever, that's just your opinion and, as such, inherently valueless. I'm sure you've heard the saying, "Opinions are like *ssholes, everybody has one!"

My view (inherently valueless like everyone else's) is that music is art, and what is good or bad in art is merely a populariity contest.

I read this a while ago about Nickelback (http://mentalfloss.com/article/78221/scientific-explanation-why-everyone-hates-nickelback), and I think I can agree with one of the quotes in it:

QuoteNickelback is too much of everything to be enough of something. They follow genre expectations too well, which is seen as empty imitation, but also not well enough, which is read as commercial tactics and as a lack of a stable and sincere identity.

I don't really mind Nickelback.

No, not an opinion. They are basic average musicians, that make basic average music. Compared to the likes of RUSH or Zeppelin, they are subpar at best!

Which is just your opinion, nothing more (one I don't share) ... if it wasn't then you should be able to define a formula, a method, a something that absolutely identifies good music vs bad. I don't believe you can. I don't believe anyone can because ultimately all of these things come down to nothing but personal preference.

Can you do that? Can you come up with a formula or whatever? If so please post it.

In my opinion no but the point I am making is that neither I, nor you, nor any other f**ker in the entire world can support that argument. That is the nature of art.

To provide another example, how would you compare the best rock guitarist with the best soul one, or blues, or jazz, or country or [insert any musical genre here] ... you can't. Not empirically this is the essence of my argument. Another argument is the art of Jackson Pollock ... a brilliant artist so I am told ... $75m dollars as I recall. Personally I don't see it, nor do I think that Tracy Emin is any good or the guy who built a submarine out car tyres which I saw the same day as I saw the piece of art that was essentially a balcony surrounded by sinks. Responding to my somewhat caustic negativity someone assured me that they all work ... I was still thinking big f***ing whoop! A friend of mine has a piece of art on his wall, one of a limited set of 25 prints by an Australian artist whose name eludes me, that the Australian government has offered him £25K for ... it's done in crayon and, honestly, my kids could have done better aged 5.

The point is that art, any kind of art, be it music, TV, film, book, painting, sculpture or poem has value that is personal and not empirical so when you say Nickleback are average and Zeppelin and Rush are good then it is nothing more than your opinion especially since, as far as I'm concerned they only made two decent songs between them, "Stairway to heaven" and "YYZ" respectively.

I have no idea what your earlier post referred to.

Not a guilty pleasure but once upon a time I used to listen to "whale music", just the sounds whales made in the ocean ... it was haunting and brilliant. This youtube video seems to be something like it:

Then someone, some cretin, went and ruined it by setting it to background music ... I mean WTF? It was perfect as  is(was) ... didn't need no [expletive deleted] background music.

Love it too, mostly for featuring actors not normally associated with horror flicks.  By the way, did you know they're now up to Tremors 5 (I think).  My favorite sequel is Tremors 4: the legend begins, which takes the story back to the Wild West days.  You haven't even seen silly till you've seen this:

QuoteAs another Nickelback scholar has observed, "the teenage girl is the most contemptible fan of all, and the mere suggestion that a band is popular with 'the girlies' may suffice to conjure the whiff of artistic failure."
