Title: Where did you get your username from?
Post by: xSilverPhinx on June 19, 2010, 02:29:22 AM
This should be an interesting topic, I hope.

So, what does your username mean?

I myself am not creative with names, the xs are to put some balance the name on either side and give it some  symmetry. I like the word  Silver more than I like the colour, metal or any qualities associated with it, so in the username it goes. Phin or Phinx, as some see it, is a secret. It can mean different things to different people. Muahaha.

Mine was the first 'insult' I received online, which must have been when I was about 14.  The conversation was about gay rights and the person called me a "pinko commie bastard faggot lover."  I remember thinking - if my way of thinking makes me a pinko commie bastard, I'll proudly wear that title.  Memories...

My usual username is Solidsquid - the name comes from a couple of sources.  Firstly, the squid part comes from me being a former "squid" - served in the Navy and one of the slang terms for a sailor is "squid".  Secondly, the solid part was paired with the squid part as a reworking of the character name from the Metal Gear video games series Solid Snake - one of my favorite games as a teen on the old NES...oddly enough I never played any of the later games, they just didn't appeal to me.  So, I dropped the Snake part and added the squid part.

After a while of using the full solidsquid, many people just started referring to me as simply "squid" and so I just used the shortened version here.

When I joined this forum I did so rather quickly and I had no user name in mind, so I came up with I Am I at the last minute for some reason. Didn't God say that in the Bible somewhere?

It has no significance to me at all, it's just something I pulled out of the air when I signed up. My real name is J.

I was playing a lotof Second Life at the time I signed up.... probably too much. My first avatar on SL is called Ellie Jillybean (SL residents here feel free to friend me, but identify yourself please. ^-^)

Ellie is my name, and Jillybean is, well, one of the last names I got to pick from when I started my SL account. I thought it had a nice ring to it. When I signed up on a different forum, the username Ellie was already taken, so I combined the first and last names of my SL avatar to form elliebean. Then I signed on here and used the same name so that it would be easier to remember. I forget things a lot. Anoxic brain injury. Sigh.

But anyway, call me Ellie. =)

I used to write Fantasy stories as a child about a character whose pseudonym was "The Black Jester," set on an imaginary continent in an age similar to the early Renaissance. He was a well known troubadour, and secretly an amoral, political machinator for sale to the highest bidder, using his fame as access to the highest courts of the various kingdoms.  He was primarily trained not as an entertainer, but as an assassin, and in this realm assassins were skillful illusionists, thieves and chemists.

It’s also, I found out later, a pseudonym used by Jaz Coleman, lead singer/composer of my favorite band, Killing Joke (see my profile pic).  :brick:

Post by: Recusant on June 19, 2010, 11:17:43 AM
I was a San Francisco bike messenger for pretty much my entire youth.  During that time I rode many different bikes; when I began, the standard style was one-speed Schwinn cruisers with huge cargo baskets on the front. By the time I retired, people were using just about any style you can imagine-- racing bikes, fixed gear, mountain bikes, and so on.  I like to think that we had something to do with inspiring the mountain bike; In the late 70s we used to take our one-speeds over the bridge to Marin and ride around in the hills for fun, and the mountain bike is said to have originated there in the early 80s. It was quite a sensation when one of us decided to build a 26 inch wheel with a geared hub and slap it in their Schwinn! Soon, that fellow had many imitators... Pretty much everyone I knew named their bike.

So the last bike I rode for a living was the Recusant, a mountain bike, but still with the oversized cargo basket. (They make great bumpers/shock absorbers in crashes, and keep the weight off your back.  I never thought much of the messenger bags that people started using in the late 80s/early 90s.)  It was a word I'd come across in my reading of Mencken, and it seemed totally appropriate as the name of a messenger bike.  When I finally came out of the dark ages and found my way onto the internet, my main purpose for doing so was to try playing Go (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)) online. I set up an account on KGS (http://www.gokgs.com/), and it seemed natural to choose the bike's name as my handle.  I've been using it ever since.  There are other 'Recusants' online of course, but so far I'm the only one who plays Go.

A bit long-winded, but there you have it. :)

That's an easy one... It's my name. I guess you'd have to ask my parents. Cecilie comes from the latin name Ceacus and means 'blind' ( :| ) which is ironic because my eyesight is quite bad. It's pretty much only used in Norway and Denmark.

Mine's an old Air Force nickname.

I'm pretty skinny, and as a firefighter, that came in handy as I could get into and out of tight places, so the guys took to calling me "Thumper" -- rabbits can get down small holes.

Then the brothers in the station got hold of the name and threw on the vaguely saurian suffix, which tickles my brain.

As with Hismikeness, I've never seen this used by anyone else in 15 years of webbing.

Steven Wright does a bit that goes, "Curiosity killed the cat but for a while I was a suspect." That sparked the idea. I thought about it more and I liked the duality of it, that one person can be both the curiosity and the cat. There's probably some deeper, subconscious meaning to it, but I couldn't tell you what it is.

I either go as CuriosityAndTheCat or just CurioAndTheCat if the former is too long for the field. Ironically, I hate cats. (I'm a dog person. Don't hate me.)

Mine is totally uninspired. I'm of Scottish descent on my dad's side. Last name begins with the letters "McQ". Been my nickname since before there was an Internet. Or personal computers. Or Cds. Or pocket calculators.

Tada!

You didn't ask, but the avatar is the HAL 9000 computer "eye" from 2001: A Space Odyssey. So is the description that goes with it. I, myself, am not 'foolproof and incapable of error', as some have inferred.

Asmodean is an antagonist in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (Brandon Sanderson)

The name is derived from the demon Asmodai (various ways of transliterating), one of the "Princes of Hell". I chose it because I like Jordan's character of Asmodean. He's pretty much a failure as antagonist, but he does play the harp and seems to only play sad, epic and epically sad pieces... Kind of like me. I'm not quite sure about the whole of it, but I can relate to that particular character really strongly.

My handle is from a Magic the Gathering card in the Mirage expansion. It is an efreet with a 'protection from white' ability, a metaphor I use for protection from self-righteous religions. It is a red card, a metaphor for hell, where I will end up as per these punks. Haven't played the game again though since I finished college.

I used to catch a lot of frogs when I was a kid. I have a pond with newts in it, and a pet salamander. I've also kept pet treefrogs. I guess I've always just had a thing about amphibians.

Caecilians are a relatively obscure branch of the amphibian lineage. I chose 'Caecilian', rather than say 'Treefrog' or 'Newt' because I was pretty sure that I'd be the only person with that username around. Which has indeed proved to be the case.

I was going to choose Caecilian, but it was already taken.
The Magic Pudding by Norman Lindsay
"It tells of a magic pudding which, no matter how often it is eaten, always reforms in order to be eaten again".
My primary qualification is accounting.
The pudding seems a metaphor for many of the world’s ills to me.

Mine is because I´m from Argentina...the british always called us by that name, specially during the Malvinas/Falkland Islands War.  I think it sounds kind of cool and also it shortens the long "argentinian" or "argentine"... just as its shorter to say scotts rather than scottish, or aussies instead of australians... the british all also called brits, aren´t they?

RLRose328 = red leather rose and a significant number.

When we were married 3 years, we lived near San Francisco.  We frequented some of the adult shops and leather stores, looking for fun stuff there.  REALLY love the accepting community in SF!  Anyway, by the counter at Stormy Leather one day was a vase of roses made of leather.  They were GORGEOUS!  When I wasn't looking, Joe bought one for me and gave it to me on our 3rd wedding anniversary.  I loved it so much, I made it my online name.  Even had a website with that name... that was 14 years ago!  It resides on my dresser on the perfume tray.  The numbers are appended to make it unique.

Got mine from the eponymous character in Melmoth the Wanderer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melmoth_the_Wanderer). I've always had a bit of a thing for Faustian pacts, plus he's one of my favourite characters in literature. He has a number of traits that I can relate to: an occasional, compulsive need to cause disaster, a tendancy to inadvertently burn down bridges and a generally reclusive, hermit lifestyle being some of them. I like the 'wandering jew' types.

But I have no real, conscious reason; the book was within my line of sight and I picked it impulsively.

Check the member list to make sure the name you want is not already in use and then drop a PM to Whitney. I don't know if there is a policy on this I haven't seen anything in the rules about not doing it.

My YouTube username (feel free to spam =3) GrimReaper2485 was really just the first thing I think I came up with one day since I wanted an account. For some reason I always found it amusing that I signed up three days before DeceasedCrab did. I'm not sure why I think about that so often. Any other names I've used on Steam have just been somewhat spontaneous and random thoughts like CornMuffinsofDoom. I have also since added lambdas to the ends of the name just for the hell of it.

Norbie was the dragon that Hagrid hatched as a pet in Harry Potter.  I used to name my raccoon babies based on themes each year.  That character appealed to me so the first baby I took in that year was named Norbie.  The rest of them that year were all "berts" of some kind or another... Norbert, Herbert, Eggbert etc.  Norbie was a special character.  He was rescued in a Georgia wildfire.  People watching the fire's progress saw his mother desperately moving babies out from her nest.  She was cut off with more babies left in the nest.  They couldn't stand it, so they went in and took the two others.  Norbie's brother died from complications, and Norbie was a tough rehabbing job.  He lived, but became unreleasable.  That is always a quandry for a rehabber.  So he became a companion and educational animal.  Luckily he had the disposition for it.  He lived with us until he passed from old age.  I honor him by using his name on-line; and my avatar is from another unreleasable raccoon, Tammy Faye.  She also spent her whole life with me.  Both of them taught me many things, from technical things about rehabbing to how to sit back & enjoy life.  Raccoons know how to be happy.  Peace, Kim

Quite a few years ago I was setting up an online poker account so that my brother (hismikeness) and I could play against each other online. He had his set up already and was pressuring me to hurry up and set mine up. I, jokingly of course, have said I hate you mike many times in my life- usually when we're playing a game and he's beating me, so I decided it would make a good user name. I've used it online ever since. It was always fun to have for poker because it's amazing how many people have mike in their users name.

So yeah. There's the story of Ihateyoumike.

This should be an interesting topic, I hope.

So, what does your username mean?

Well a "Papist" was at one time a dergatory name for a person who follows the Pope. And so like all derogatory names these days, if someone calls them self a said name, it almost becomes a bastion of pride for them. And I wanted a "proud" name that stands out, so, with the help of some friends, BAM; PapistItalian  ;D

And I'm a 4th genaration Italian-American. Full blooded.

And 16 is my favorite number.

St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (also known by her birth name Edith Stein) is a personal role model of mine.  She was a great philosopher- student of Husserl at one point in time.  Born Jewish, declared atheist by the time she was a teen, and an adult convert to Catholicism.  She ended up joining a community of Carmelite nuns and was murdered in the Holocaust.

I never got why people have a favorite number... What makes that particular number better than other numbers? Is it your birthday or something?

My guess is that numbers are usually connected with some fond memory or another.

For example... my favorite number is 23.  Both my mom and my grandmother were born on the 23rd.  My father wore the number 23 for every sports jersey.  And so did I.

Being young, I've always had the internet.. so I started out with 'childish' usernames, such as xsurferbabex (because I surf) and Babydoll (because that was my nickname in school/family/everywhere).. and I thought being 20 I need something a little more mature, especially seeing as I write my own blog and stuff..
And listening to a song by Ellie Goulding called 'Be the writer' I just thought of... 'Illbethewriter'.. because I like to write and I'm an aspiring journalist.

The "absurd" part comes from Albert Camus' idea that our existence has no meaning, so our lives are absurd and it is up to us to give them meaning.  The solidarity part comes from the nature of the human condition and how everyone is really trying to cope with the same absurd life.

I love reading about existentialism, but sadly I can't explain it as eloquently as the authors can.

The late great Carl Sagan wrote;

From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Look again at that dot. That's here, that's home, that's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

Totally unoriginal, but mine came from attempting to make my youtube username MiriChan.  I like the Japanese honorific Chan and the name Miri is from the much loved character in Star Trek: The Original Series episode Miri.  Her name is Miri and she is the sweetest kid ever.  Also the girl who plays her is in True Grit afterwards.  But, like so many of my other names Miri was taken.  So I just added another 'i' to it and called myself MiiriChan.  Kind of boring actually.

In the Old Testament, Jephthah makes a deal with God that he will slaughter whoever first comes out of his house to greet him when he returns from war - if only God will grant him victory. God agrees, and it becomes a horrible story of genocide, child abuse, subjugation of women, and murder.

"Jephthah" sums up the moral shortcomings of religion for me.

The result was Infraclear, my attempt at producing an abstract concept ???. My passport.
It's not my given name.  I've been known as Willow since about 1999.  I hated my given name, so changed it.  Willow is a tree name, and at the time I chose it was gender neutral, but has since become quite strongly feminine.  I did my deed poll legally changing my name in 2003 so that I could get married as Willow.

Even my mum calls me Willow these days.

I used to be a rower, mixing it with the boys/girls at Henley in the 90's
My lean legs attracted the nickname. They can now sometimes be seen in cycling lycra - not such an attractive sight.

Sadly, nothing to do with a propensity to spread my legs...

I wrote the book, The Superior Educator.  The book deals with the task of mirroring Confucius and his Superior Man in the classroom.  The question asked in the book is, "What does it take to become a Superior Educator?"  My username, SuperiorEd does not imply I am superior.  It actually implies the practice of a calm and assertive approach to classroom management where the dignity of the student is preserved by the elimination of bias against others.   Too often, teachers resort to practices in the classroom with discipline that they would never consider if the parent were sitting in the back of the room.  Bias builds ground for the other person to stand against you in a debate.  Best to speak for the other person in the manner they should be speaking for themselves.  This makes an even field for discussion to preserve dignity of the individual.  POST 10

True.  Students can blossom like a flower when they are loved and accepted no matter their station in life or their ability to reason.  Positive can only add to positive or cancel negative.  Negative can only add more negative.  This is true for all aspects of life.

I'm not terribly creative when it comes to screen names either. Earthling comes from a website I had years ago . . . lets just say that I read the application to man in a book. At the time David Bowie had out the Earthling CD and, though not a big fan of Bowie I liked the cover art so much that when a friend played me the CD I really liked it, and bought a copy.

I suspect the fact that Attila and I were both banned when I joined, because we share an IP number (among other things), has outed us as a couple. Ildiko was Attila the Hun's last wife - young and gorgeous, like me - and suffice it to say he didn't survive the wedding night.  Though not for the reason one might expect. ;D

My sister baptized my her daughter and the priest asked her what biblical name she would give her daughter. My sister said she didn't know any, the priest said she had to come up with one. My sister said the only name she knew from the bible was Mary Magdalene. The priest looked around confused, hoping someone would say something, no one did, so my niece was baptized with the biblical name of Maria Magdalena. *I think she is known as a prostitute in the bible. I am not a prostitue,  :)but I thought the story was funny.

Quote from: magdalena on November 13, 2011, 04:55:08 AM*I think she is known as a prostitute in the bible.

QuotePope Gregory the Great's homily on Luke's gospel dated 14 September 591 first suggested that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute: "She whom Luke calls the sinful woman, whom John calls Mary, we believe to be the Mary from whom seven devils were ejected according to Mark. And what did these seven devils signify, if not all the vices? ... It is clear, brothers, that the woman previously used the unguent to perfume her flesh in forbidden acts."(homily XXXIII)[13]

In 1969 the Vatican, without commenting on Pope Gregory's reasoning,[14] implicitly rejected it by separating Luke's sinful woman, Mary of Bethany, and Mary Magdala via the Roman Missal.[15]

This identification of Mary Magdalene as a prostitute was followed by many writers and artists until the 20th century. Even today it is promulgated by some secular and occasional Christian groups. It is reflected in Martin Scorsese's film adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis's novel The Last Temptation of Christ, in José Saramago's The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, Jean-Claude La Marre's Color of the Cross and Hal Hartley's The Book of Life.

It was because of this association of Mary as a prostitute that she became the patroness of "wayward women", and "Magdalene houses" became established to help save women from prostitution

From Wiki (http://"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Magdalene#As_prostitute").  ;)

Now my name was prety much a panic choise, to be honest. I have a couple of other net nicks, but I decided to try something else, but couldn't think of any good ones. Then my thoughts went along the line of *hmmmm, can't think of anything. Ok, so what do I like? Well, history...and I am kinda sorta a geek...meh, good enough* ;D

I just got it. Thank you for the enlightenment. ;D Very clever. hahaha.

I took my name, Ransom, from C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy. I think I first read the S.T. when I was 12? 13? Somewhere around there. I've read it once since then, and it was only better then I remembered. My favorite is possibly the 2nd in the trilogy, Perelandra, where Ransom demonstrates how to handle Satanic influences (20 lb rock to the face, among other things ;)). But yeah, that's my username's origins.

My first horse's name was Buddy, and I like horses. The 4 was just a typo that stuck. I made that username when I young and I just never bothered to change it. It's kinda stuck in real life too, my mother calls my Buddy sometimes.

"Pharaoh Cat" says something about being led by a cat, and my philosophy of life is, What Would Your Cat Do (WWYCD)?

Here's a picture of my cat on one of her favorite perches:

What would a cat do if a small meal sized animal started rubbing itself against it whilst making a whiny noise?

Well, it may not seem like it, but I am quite well-attuned to diplomacy and there are situations when such is called for. Especially when you need to talk yourself or a third party out of something or gain something.

In that case it's understandable, but most of the time, it's a hassle. i recall once in school, my teacher wrote a guy up because he called me black. She said, "No one is black. Black is a color. She's African American." Eventually It worked it's way up the chain of commands and the principle told her that she was being ridiculous. I agreed. And it's not that you don't seem like you could be politically correct, it's just that you don't seem like the kind of person to care enough about them. Ftw, right? :)

My username comes from my ice skating hobby.

I did ballet for eight years growing up and also happen to LOVE cold weather so I figured that was a fantastic way to combine the two....then I got out on the ice and realized how friggin hard it is so it's moreso a recreation thing than an actual drive to figure skate, I enjoy it none the less.  It's just exhilerating being out there on the ice, I love it :)

Way back in the 90s when the internet was young and so was I, I found my way into an early Xian forum where a handful of atheists were regularly debating God with the faithful who all seemed to have happy, uplifting names like "GodsLove57" or "JesusIsLord" or "Saved1."  I chose to make a name that made it clear I was not one of them.  That was an awesome forum and I have a lot of fond memories of the lively discussions we all had.

As a sidenote, I became good online friends with a Xian woman there who took a shine to me.  She would reguarly ask me my opinion on things going on in her life and she never tried to "save"me.  I always thought it was nice and a little puzzling that she had reached out to an atheist for friendship in a forum filled with Xians.  I asked her why once and she told me it was because most Xians seemd to always reference scripture when discussing anything with her and she felt like I just talked to her like a regular person.  She didn't always want to be preached to or reminded of God's expectations of her and I never did any of that.

Crocoduck! Wonderful.

My username looks mysterious or whatever but actually it's a reference to something that I guess is cute.

When my little sister was 7, which I guess makes me 10 at the time, one of my cousins and I read her diary. It was some children's diary where the character from some Judy Blume-ish series would write one page and the owner of the book would fill in the next page in a format similar to the previous page. On one page there was a poem about favorite foods that was something like
"Roses are red, violets are blue. I like blueberries, and strawberries, too." (I am really improvising.)

My sister wrote, in response:
"Roses are pizza
Violets are pancake
I like chiken"

I love my sister. That's all my username means!

Mine is how I romanize the katakana version of my name (テã,£ãƒ•ã,¡ãƒ‹ãƒ¼). Technically it'd probably be either "Tifanii" or "Teifuanii," but I like the way teifuani looks better.

That's pretty cool.  I actually knew a bit of Katakana and Hirigana, but when I got to the Kanji side of the house, I felt like my head was going to explode lol!

Well to answer the topic's question, my name comes from a great book by Terry Goodkind called "Pillar of Fire" (I think... it's a series lol).  There's a quote by the main character that I really loved.  "The only sovereign that I can allow to rule me is Reason."  I guess it just stuck with me lol.

I again, mentioned this in my original thread about how I got to have my user name. My name comes from my all time favorite movie, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". It means "little old man from scene 24". However, when I first came up with this user name many moons ago, I misquoted the movie. The quote really is "it's the old man from scene 24". But by the time I had realized that I had already used the user name and had a muscle memory of typing lomfs24. No going back now.

And there is significance there too. Notice how that name begins with an A, has an m in it and comes from a book? Well, there is another such name there. How can it possibly be a coincidence?!  ;D

I used to play call of duty 4 with this guy name S1lentSn1per all the time, and so i took the "S1lent" part from that. I made a rogue on WoW and I was like trying to figure out how i could make a name close to "Silent" but make it different but still cool. So i changed the S to and X and i thought that that was still too close to Silent so i put two i's cause it looked awesome in my opinion. So yea, no deep, meaningful message behind my name. I guess it kinda reflects how quiet i am in real life but that's neither here nor there. xD

That's awesome. We just watched that again, along with Life of Brian. I'd be surprised if anyone this forum has not see Brian

I've never been good at making usernames. Usually I go with something musical instrument related because I'm always proud of what I play.  :P

I came up with 'Radiant' when I shifted my life-view to one that's more positive. I used to be a very negative pessimistic 'realist'. However, then some things happened and I realized that negativity gets me nowhere and is a waste of my life. By negativity I mean thinking that life sucks, that I'm a failure that can never accomplish my goals, and that I'm below everybody else. That is very much how I used to think, and I let it be known. I don't want to be seen like that anymore. I want to set an example as well, but I know choosing a positive username won't do that.

I think one of the coolest super powers in fiction, if not THE coolest super power, is the ability to stretch and form the body into various positions and objects.

Of course, there are others that I think are great: intangability, invulnerability, invisibility, and telekinesis ("Use the FORCE Luke!")

I thought to myself: "How can you incorporate all of these attributes into a character without screwing up the plot of the story?" Clearly someone with all of these abilities combined would seem to be stuck on "GOD MODE" all of the time and in effect take away from the story, or make it difficult for the pitiful mortal reading/viewing such a story to connect with the character on a personal level. Thats when it hit me.

HUMOR is the key!

All of these types of attributes together in a serious character would flat out ruin a story, as such a character could lay waste to any difficulties within a story that are made to show boundaries, and therefore any sense of humanity. Humor is definitely the key. I began to think "which character has these attributes, or something cloes to them", and remembered back on my youth watching the Plastic Man comedy hour as a kid in the late 70's. Sure, Plastic Man isnt REALLY intangible, but he can shrink to one inch high and duck into cracks and crevices. Plastic Man is damn near invulnerable. Bat Man even once said he was the most powerful member of The Justice League and would more than likely be able to survive a direct impact by a thermo nuclear device. In a sense, Plastic Man can never truly die or be destroyed. Plastic Man cannot become invisible, but how visible is a one inch tall Plastic Man? Plastic Man neither has telekinesis, yet instead of using his mind to grab something from far away, all he needs to do is reach his arm out and grab it. He can even morph his hand to become big enough to grab massive things and even enhance his strenght to be able to lift such things. Plastic Man can swell to gigantic sizes, rivaling sky scrapers and still retaining his invulnerability and stretching power. To top it off, he has a humans level of humor and failings to allow us puny mortals to connect with him.

When I signed up I thought of using my old handle, that has been with me for the last 16 years. It is Booswig, but unlike the name, I have evolved a bit through the years, and do not like the negative connotation associated with it in South Africa.

The origin of the nickname stems from my early gaming years (DukeNukem, Quake), where my friend used to scream "booswig!!" everytime I fragged him. After a while people started calling my that at LANs, and I adopted the nickname. It has been with me for the last 14 of the 16 years, but, I have found that the nickname actually bothers me, and, since I really do not care for anonymity or weird names, I started using my real name and abbreviation of my surname as my nickname/handle.

Out of the Caesar's Augustus was the best one, Tiberius was more of a tyrant, Gaius (Caligula) was batshit insane and Claudius was easily manipulated although he did alot right. Augustus is widely regarded as the Greatest ruler the Empire ever had.

Whenever I see your username, for some reason I keep thinking of the word Semester mixed in with Maestro. Which only makes sense if you're in a school concert performance.  :D

Ye but she is a fictional representation of a romantic notion.
Augustus was real and he ruled a cruel slave empire.
I suppose as a child I sought commonality with the great and powerful of history but I'm dubious of such an attraction in adults.  If Juliet represents romance what does Augustus represent?  To me he's the guy with ultimate power who used it to subdue all in reach, others may see him differently.
I regret making the original comment, I suppose I make a distinction between fictional evil characters and real ones.  Get yourself a Darth Vader outfit and it's fun, dress up as Hitler and it's not.

Sorry Augustus, I'll go give myself a good whipping.

Where did I get my username from?

Acronyms are fun to play with. So instead of saying that "ibm" stands for International Business Machines, my username stands for "I be, I am" ... IBM. Just like René Descartes' quote "I think, therefore I am". Nothing deep or serious.

The Roman empire might have been a cruel slave owner's society, but please look at things from the position of the ages. Dispossessed of our modern outlook, the Roman elite's entire way of life depended on their slaves. Of course, it was only natural that the empire should be ruined, but that giant dis-equity of power allowed the Romans to create a magnificent culture. Today, we have such notions as "egalitarianism", which, if brought to its logical conclusion, would not allow civilization to exist in the first place.  8)

So, when all of civilization has collapsed, there will be only China, and those other countries which make use of semi-slave labour?

That would be a good idea to start a new topic with so that you can justify that statement.

We interrupt this fascinating discussion on Roman culture...

My usual handles are only barely dignified enough to exist on role play sites, so I wanted something special for HAF. "Unlinked" comes from my story-in-planning which, considering my track record, will stay in planning at least until I graduate college. In this story, there's a machine called a link that you get injected into your brain that allows you to interact with all the futuristic technology that Mune (the planet/universe that most of the story takes place in) offers, but it comes with a price. In accepting a link, you also accept the constant surveillance of the Mind, a massive supercomputer that regulates every link and every thought from every person with a link. Muneish society is set up so that there's pretty much no reason to not get a link, but there are a few who realize how messed-up the whole system is and remain unlinked.

Now that sounds like an interesting story! Don't let it sit around gathering dust until you graduate. Just write it.  ;D I know more than a few people just off the top of my head who would pay to read that right now, in e-book format! Anyhow, cool username. :) I'd like to hope that in that scenario, I'd remain unlinked as well.

Gaaah, but there's so much planning to be done! I have to design at least the basic culture for four more alien races and the physical designs for two of them. I'm not even satisfied with the personality and history of the main character yet. And the time travel--it's... coming. But that's enough ranting. I think I'm just afraid to start out wrong and screw something up that'll become important later. XD

Alistair Reynolds has done something a bit like that but that shouldn't be discouraging.  With smart phones we are already part way there so further exploration of the implications is worthwhile.

I'm not meaning to be negative for the sake of it but I don't like the word Mune.  Dune is cool, Mune feels like mewl.

Really? What story? I'd like to see as much material as I can that's gone over any similar subject, halfway for other ideas and halfway so I don't inadvertently do something too similar to what's already been done. And yeah, that's why I have no smartphone and no Facebook. They feel too much like the Mind.

Really? Pronounced myoon? Yeah, I guess so. I made that name a long time ago. Now I'm intending the official language for the planet to sound vaguely like Greek or Latin, so maybe I should change it after all. Suggestions?

Well, if the Mind is anything like facebook, then I think it might be safe to say that the engine's running and the lights are on, but nobody's at the wheel and the current resident forgot to pay the electric bill. :-\

Oh, shit, I forgot to tell what my username means. Se is a bastardization of "De", and maestro is my mentor, who would probably dislike his name being associated with an atheist forum. meh. <(*O*)<

Ah, I see. OK. Thanks for explaining. :)

I've got several of the prayers memorized in Latin, so I just wondered if you had a certain fondness for the Pater Noster for a specific reason, rather than, say, the Ave Maria or the Gloria Patri.

Post by: musicality on April 18, 2012, 07:43:36 AM
I'm a classical musician. So the term "musicality" comes up a lot.

Merriam-Webster Definition of MUSICALITY
1: sensitivity to, knowledge of, or talent for music
2: the quality or state of being musical : melodiousness

But musicality is more than just being sensitive to the sounds of music itself. It is becoming vulnerable to the music...to yourself. It is letting everyone else see and hear you and how you interpret the music. Every time I played the chopin nocturne Op. 9 No 1, it would never be the same performance every time. I would be feeling something different every day. I let myself become engulfed into the different dynamics and tones and colors. And I didn't care what anyone else thought about what I did or how I looked. I wanted everyone to feel what I felt. Some say, technique is important to getting the perfect sound and musical talent. Yes. But Technique will always be the slave to the music.

To me, Musicality is more than just a way to perform, it is a musical lifestyle.

Strangely enough texasatheist has been available on every forum or social site I've signed up for.  Go figure.

It's a play on words. :D See, renege is a french word that means "Take Back", while Reversi is latin that means something like, "go to the opposite/reverse in direction". Thus, RenegeReversi[/b] is a roundabout way of saying, ''To come to a certainty. I like it very much. :D

I am not to worried that big brother is going to come after me. This could change of course. There was a court ruling recently that said that punching the like button on facebook is a political statement but not protected speech. In addition if some of the super religious fundie types, such as Santorum or Bachman, were to come to power being any type of free thinker might be a lot less viable.

I had to see what your reason was because I am playing Diablo 3 and the character Azmodan is mentioned who is a bit of a grey blob, is one of the great evils and has an army of minions. Plus you mentioned looting in video games a while back and Diablo is the daddy of all games that includes looting. I had never heard of the character anywhere else before. For those who have no idea what I am talking about. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlOhoP7sttU)

Malakoot is an Arabic word I think. It gives the feeling of something spiritual so I chose it because I believe that body without spirit, intelligence and morals is of no use.

No use to whom?

Oh, I've got everyone beat on this front.  My surname is impossible to spell AND rhymes with vagina.

My surname is difficult to pronounce for foreigners. I'm named after a city in the province of Utrecht. Someone with the same surname was a very famous goalkeeper in the 80's.

ABSOLUTELY! haha. Love it.

Mine is so ridiculous I almost don't want to tell you. :P I have a batch of usernames I use for EVERY other web presence, and I wanted to use something unidentifiable here - you never know when the religious right will fully take over the US and turn us into some version of The Handmaid's Tale, and I am in no hurry to be strung up. In other words, I'm not ready to "come out." And so I sat here thinking, "what else? Hmm ... What other nickname have been bestowed upon me?"

Well, I just finished marathoning all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls (don't judge me), and my fiance jokingly calls me "Ace" as one of the characters called another. SO, there it is.

There are ways to find out.  Too public to just come out and say it here.  Sleuthing time!

Don't be upset when you see a ninja peeking in your window later on tonight.
Don't forget it won't be PC looking back, but a large protective dog.

That's what the dart gun is for. ;D

G85, you have a dart gun, right? Right?!
Blowpipe. Does much the same thing, really...

Now if you'll excuse me... (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.smiley-lol.com%2Fsmiley%2Fsport%2Fmartiaux%2Fninjadispar.gif&hash=b160adc863443b0f8eb28aa2476dd7626c8c18e8)
There is a very good reason why criminals, law enforcement agencies and the militaries of the world prefer firearms to darts, blowpipes and what have you. Bring a gun. It increases the chances of a favourable outcome for you.

Ace; you must live in Oklahoma or Kansas or some location that is bible beltish.  I/we respect your choice for staying in the closet. You can take heart in the knowledge that our heathen ranks are growing steadily............maybe in another hundred years we will become socially acceptable, meanwhile those religious sinners can go to hell.......Unless they are saved of course.

Muahaha.  <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/devil.gif" alt="" title="devil" />

My username is from Matthew 24:14

My username comes from my ice skating hobby.

I did ballet for eight years growing up and also happen to LOVE cold weather so I figured that was a fantastic way to combine the two....then I got out on the ice and realized how friggin hard it is so it's moreso a recreation thing than an actual drive to figure skate, I enjoy it none the less.  It's just exhilerating being out there on the ice, I love it :)

Hey there launion! Yes, I am a Filipino. Sorry I haven't posted for what, 4 years? I currently writing my dissertation. So, don't expect much. And if Thor is reading this, Long live happy atheists!

"The Third Chimpanzee" is a book by Jared Diamond. I like the idea that we are chimps. I live in a rural bible belt community and thinking of myself that way bolsters my self esteem after a day mingling with creationists. I have a personal mission. I would like to spread the idea that we shake hands by offering the back of our hands to each other and gently touching instead of bumping fists or slapping palms. Seems so tribal and cooperative. Jane Goodall does it.

I explained this in a topic once before (not this one, my username was changed very recently), but it is kind of obscure so I'll explain it again.

'Harmonie' is an old term in like the 19th century and possibly before for ensembles which consisted of woodwind and brass instruments. I love woodwind and brass instruments, and music history, so it's a great username... Even if very few people will get it and probably think it's just an alternate spelling of 'Harmony'.

It's been my nickname since 1997 (I've only been online since 2001). I used to be a strong built looking guy (now I am old and flabby), a friend at the time, thought I was in the National Guard (there's a local post) so he started calling me "Nam". It stuck.

You don't have to feel ashamed! It's not common knowledge. I did not even know the term until maybe two or three months ago when I was reading a history book on the bassoon. And then I was like "OMG that needs to be my username!"
