Title: Pets...what do you have?
Post by: Whitney on June 22, 2006, 09:44:17 AM
I have two cats, two milk snakes, 4 geckos, one king snake, one hairless rat (lucky bastard was meant to be snake food but the king snake is being pissy), and a spur thigh sulcata tortoise.  We are about to add some chameleons to the menagerie.

Pics of the critters in the album:  http://www.happyatheistforum.com/album.php (http://www.happyatheistforum.com/album.php)

I always thought you only had Darwin as a pet. Well I am getting my sister's cat "Iris" soon, I have no pictures but I'm gonna fix that soon enough.

I have had cats since I graduated from the Army, some 33 years ago. All kinds of cats; fat cats, fun cats, mad cats, clawy cats, tiny cats, nutty cats. I have had as many as 4 at one time. Presently, I have 3; Mandi (the oldest, named by my niece), Maverick, and Mist.

My first cat was Visage de Feu…had to give her up when I split up with my ex. She kept Visage. I got a place that didn’t allow pets…the last time I did that.

My fav cat of all time was Tory (Toranaga-Sama). Got him in Chicago. My roommate and his gf had a dog, Shmoozy. When Tory was a kitten, he scratched Shmoozy’s eye, so I was forced to have him declawed (done by drilling out the claws, not chopping off at the knuckle). Tory was strictly an indoor cat, being in the big city, but he was always trying to escape to the wilds of the street. There was a foyer in our building, so that’s as far as he got, when he did slip out. He used to love to hide on top of the fridge, and launch himself at people, as they came into the kitchen…not maliciously, but he had no fear.

Some time after I left Chicago, I found myself camping for about 3 months (yeah, I was homeless, but that’s another story). So, Tory had his first experience as an outdoor cat. No matter where I was camping, Tory made it his home. He would go on hikes with me, sneaking along in the bushes and trees beside me, never wandering too far. He became a deft hunter, even though he had no claws. He brought me his trophies on a daily basis. I used to leave the flap to my tent open at night, so he could come and go. That ended when he brought a live mole in one night to show me.

Great cat…horrible end. Sometime later, while I was at work, a neighbor let his two dogs out, and they cornered Tory. Friends found him, but he could not be saved.

Why cats? They are mysterious and independent. They always have that portion of wildness lurking somewhere inside. They can be very loyal, though most people aren’t aware of it, especially those used to the slavish devotion of dogs. Unlike dogs, cats do not forgive and forget. Offend a cat, and he remains offended. You must earn a cat’s friendship, and you must do it always, kind of like with people. Dog people generally can’t appreciate the subtleties of cats. Cats are completely hedonistic, doing what they want, when they want, which is fine, if you admire independence.

So, yeah, I like cats. Deal with it.

Laetus, I love your gray cat, she's a cute one. And did you really name your cat Nietzsche? That's awesome.

I have one fat-ass, old tuxedo cat, Rocky. And we just got two new ragdoll siamese kittens of which I will definitely show you pictures...when I have some.

Ya, the cat's name is really Nietzsche (technically my bf's cat)  the grey cat is also named after an atheist the cat's name is Corbu short for Le Corbusier an atheist architect.  I actually didn't name the grey cat with the idea that it would be named after an atheist...I just like Corbu's work.

Siamese kittens are so adorable...I'd love to see pics of them and your other cat when you have them :)

Two Border Collies, Buster and Shadow. They're siblings. Shadow is the darker of the two, hence the name. Plus, he never leaves my side.

They're smarter and better behaved than my kids. At least that's what I tell my kids. But I also tell them I don't know who their real father is.

Adorable kitten, Court.

I have two cats, Kitty and Misty, both gray tiger females.  They tolerate each other's presence and mine, but they both adore my husband.  Cats are comforting without being too needy.

I've had lots of pets over the years:  a dog, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and even a skunk (when I was three).  I don't do fish or birds, not because I don't like them but because I don't trust myself to do right by them.

Kitty woke me at 6 a.m. and I blame her for my foul mood today.  She was howling for no apparent reason.  She's lucky she's cute.

My cat does that to me except she's overweight and jumps on me with her kangeroo feet. Also she's knocked down my prized Kalishinov when I had it propped against my desk while I was doing weekly cleaning and maintenance but she's too cute to be mad at.

Those are cute cats, Courtney.

We have a small sickly tuxedo cat named Jasmine that I rescued when I was stationed in Hawaii about 10 years ago.

We also have a rag doll cat named Sophia that replaced our very big Maine Coon named Sebastian, who passed away about a year and a half ago. I hate my last words to him...he was looking kinda sad, and I said "you gonna survive, buddy?". He was dead when I got home. Kidney stones blocked his bladder and he went septic.

We don't have cats, cats have us.

I used to have a cat, called Mickey. He died a couple of years ago of old age (20 something). My wife and I would like to have another cat, but since we now have a weekend relationship with me living in Germany and she in Portugal; this isn't really the right time.

HOly shit, 20 something?! I didn't know cats lived that long. My Brother-in-law has a cat that;s pushing 14 but I think he'll outlive us. He's all crypt-keeper looking but that little bugger survives EVERYTHING.

He broke out once of the house (we still don't know how to this day) and survived 2 days on his own in one of the coldest days in South Texas (the Christmas where it snowed actually like 18 inches)

Pets... i like snakes and cats. but i have neither. my mom is afraid of snakes and slightly allergic to cats. so instead, in america, we have two very large fish tanks full of fish (and some mini shirmp, food for the ropefish), and a pond in our backyard filled with goldfish, frogs, and turtles. we used to have baby chicks, but they all died, of various reasons. we also had wild rabbits, but i don't know what's happening to them after i left for china.

We just bought a ball python yesterday...I'm afraid of snakes too (kinda weird since we have 3 now).  But it's really calm. Depending on how afraid your mom is of snakes, you may be able to take her to a pet store (when you get home) and show her how friendly that species is.  Worth a try, I guess.

Too bad that she's allergic to cats.  Just make a pouty face and tell her that if she really loves you she'd just take medicine every day so you can have a cat  Ok, so I'm kidding about the guilt trip.  I had a babysitter growing up who was allergic to cats, she would start looking kinda puffy after watching us for the night and that was after we moved the cats into a room and vacuumed the whole house.

You could get a ferret...they are kinda like cats.

Anyway, I'd like to have a pond with turtles in it eventually...ponds are so pretty.  But we won't have a house till at least next year.  How do you keep the frogs in the pond?

Fun.  I've heard that it is possible to house train rabbits like a cat.  Actually, here is a link someone gave me back when I was thinking of getting a rabbit http://www.rabbit.org/behavior/ (http://www.rabbit.org/behavior/)  Then we decided the cats would probably want to eat the rabbit, so I haven't gotten one.

I don't know. But we have a frog living in our pool (I thought the chlorine would convince him to move on, but he hasn't yet) at the moment.

Well my mom... she basically thinks snakes are -ew! slimy! why would someone ever want a snake as a pet! too expensive! where would you get the rats to feed it! eww, rats! get a snake when you have your own house! eww!- yeah.

I think my 2 year old baby brother would probably strangle the cat, if we ever got one.

as for the frogs, they stay in the pond themselves. i guess they like it there. did you know that frogs eat rice?
There was always this one turtle who would crawl out (a difficult feat for a turtle because there is a sort of rock rim surrounding our pond) and end up somewhere near the fence. We'd constantly put it back for a while until it finally learned that it just could not get past the fence.

A toy poodle called Benny (see Gallery).

He lived in Montana for most of his life but emigrated to England, with my wife.  I doubt he realises how far away he is from his original home.  We talk to him about crossing North America and the Atlantic now and then, but he just looks at us with a puzzled expression.

So who are the cat lovers on this forum?  8)

Do you have a cat?  More than one?  Boy or girl?  Name?  How old?

I have an eight month old girl named Boots.  In the pic she was six months old.

Any unusual behaviors?

Boots plays fetch.  I throw things, she runs like lightning to get them and then brings them back to me so I can throw them again.  :)

Rats good. Cats evil. Yup.

Well, the opposite, really, because Asmodean's rats, they are evil and the only cats Asmodean ever met were good. But then, he likes evil, Asmodean does. Even more than he does refering to himself in third person.

I am definitely a cat person! I have two boys

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw125%2FDeterminedJuliet%2FIMG_9901.jpg&hash=2e972383f6e3e2ca282db98d10c11855a5d41783)
This is Ollie. He's a ticked tabby and I think he's the best. He was on death row in our clinic (we used to euthanize animals for the SPCA) and one of the girlies rescued him because he was so handsome. She fostered him for a little while, and then, once I started working at the hospital, I adopted him.

He has a seizure disorder, so he needs phenobarb twice a day, and semi-annual bloodwork, but he's worth it (the meds can make him act a little "tipsy", though) . He's "my" boy and gives me cuddles every night before I go to bed. I call him our "gentleman cat", because that's exactly what he's like. He usually hides from strangers and is a very good judge of character.

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw125%2FDeterminedJuliet%2FIMG_9871.jpg&hash=d6658040f83bdf96d1b50e7b4579bfd5bc3ae5c6)

This is Rocky. He was a barn cat that I adopted a five years ago and was the first "real" pet I've ever owned on my own. He's kind of a douchebag, but I love him. He's "alpha-cat" and has a love-hate relationship with my husband - he only ever really gives my husband cuddles, but he also ambushes my husband's ankles from time to time. He pretty much ignores me.

He's not afraid of anyone, and will usually run right up to someone and say hello if they come in. He knows that our son is "special" though, so he's pretty tolerant of his toddler ways. When people say that cats are planning to take over the world, Rocky is definitely in on this plan.

I'm perfectly fine with carnivory.  For me and for Boots.  In fact, I sometimes amuse myself with the notion of feeding Boots live mice.  I wouldn't have any moral objections.  Those little dry nuggets are just cheaper and easier.

Cruelty to livestock is a whole different question, of course.  I don't cook so I don't buy meat at the grocer, but on those occasions when I've cajoled my daughter into cooking us something, I insisted we buy free range.

The one thing I like about Islam and Orthodox Judaism is the insistence, in both halal (Muslim) and kosher (Jewish) doctrine, on the swiftest and most merciful kill.

Ha!  That's cool.  :)

I enjoy watching Boots teach herself about the world.  For example, my bathroom has two doors, and Boots recently figured out that if she pushes some little object under a closed door and then can't get it, she can run around to the other side, where the other door might be open, and if it's open, she can come into the bathroom and retrieve the object!  I was so proud of her when she figured that out!  :)

Do you think the ambush is meant to be belligerent or playful?  Boots pounces on my legs from time to time.  I interpret it as play.  She and I play like a couple of cats would.  I chase her and she runs away but keeps coming back so I can chase her again.  Sometimes she lets me grab her and then we wrestle a bit, with her biting my hands and wrists (with restraint, of course) and then I toss her in the air so she lands on my bed - and back she comes for more!  :)

She doesn't really like to be cuddled.  She tolerates it best when she's lying curled up in a cardboard box, something she often does.  Her way of showing love is following me around.  She also routinely curls up into my stretched out legs if I'm sitting in my recliner or if I'm lying in bed.  I take this as an enormous sign of trust.  After all, when is any animal most vulnerable?  Surely when asleep.  Yet Boots chooses to sleep between my legs.

A funny thing she does is leap onto my shoulder (when I'm standing) and then perch there like I'm a pirate and she's a parrot!  :)

I've had to throw a bandicoot in the garbage bin after my daughters dog killed it, and cats are worse for wildlife than dogs.

The one thing I like about Islam and Orthodox Judaism is the insistence, in both halal (Muslim) and kosher (Jewish) doctrine, on the swiftest and most merciful kill.

Well I have my doubts about that.  Australian sheep are crammed on ships, transported across the Indian Ocean and equator to the Middle East.  Many die, on the way I've seen film of people buying them at market, tossing them in the boot of a car to take them home where they'll mercifully cut their throat.  Infidels can't be trusted to kill them here and send them refrigerated.  Cattle being sent to Indonesia don't do to well either, the lucky ones get stunned before they have their necks mercifully hacked.

That swiftest and most merciful kill thing, it's like so many other religious values, they may have been best practice in their day, but their day is thousands of years past.  Best practice now would be to kill the things as near possible to where they lived, stunning them makes sense, pointing to Mecca doesn't, a bolt to the head is quicker than a sliced throat.

Well, there's a question for all those who love cat's, (I do own two) so here's one for snakes. I love snakes, there smooth, scaly, have beady little eyes, and can swallow you whole (some of them). My own snake is corn snake, and watching him eat live mice has got to be the coolest thing in the world. So why do you love (or hate) snakes?

Why? because it's tired of dying for our sins I think.

See! Those animals are so cool, they even get recoilless rifles named after them. The coolest thing we have here is like... A bear. And what kind of name is "bear" anyways?! Lacks both sophistication and a nice ring, not to mention that certain something the French call... I don't know what, but they do have a word for it.

Oh, it's totally a belligerent attack with claws and teeth and blood and whatnot. My husband has scars from them.

I think it's because he wasn't properly socialized as a kitten. At the time, I didn't realize how important it was for a kitten to learn some manners from his mother and other kittens, so I took him home far too young. I think it's left him a little mal-adjusted, in ways.

He doesn't do it as often, now, though. I think he's starting to realize that he has probably the cushiest life imaginable. My biggest struggle now is trying to keep him from getting too fat.  :P

Did he ever do this with other people?  It may have just taken him awhile to warm up to your husband, sometimes cats dislike people for reasons that just can't be understood.  I lived with a cat once who absolutely hated one of my brothers -- whenever he visited she would hide behind doors, then leap out and bite his ankle when walked by.  It was a good thing he was a cat lover.

This is Deirdre, the cat who currently keeps me as staff and has only bitten vets and groomers:

A really excellent point that has got me thinking about the very notion of tradition and how detrimental it can sometimes be.  Principles taught for centuries can be OK, but specific actions taught for centuries will eventually be outmoded and best discarded.

Oh yea, I take him out all the time. He is a lot bigger than the picture makes him look. He is about 18 inches from snout to tail tip. He likes to sit on my laptop when I work on homework because it's warm. Sometimes he comes to school and stays in the agriculture classroom and I'll show him off.

Worry not, Asmodean and the Beloved Small Ones-- kitty is a gentle soul. Either that or the worst hunter ever.

Back when I had gerbils, she figured out how to get the cage open... and... crawled inside it. I came home, saw the cat in the cage, went "OH SHIT," and then realized she was just sleeping. With the gerbils curled up asleep next to her.

(The rat cage is much more secure.)

My animal science teacher loves my criiters. She one taught the whole class with Herman on her shoulder. It was hilarious. I just realized that I have quite a few nicknames for Herman. Herman, Hermanator, Godzirra, Green One, and Great Green Lizard.

I am thinking that sometime when Herman gets bigger, I'll get him a lady lizard so that we can have baby Hermans.

The dogs get let out, the cat's have their litter box, Herman's tank is a self-sustaining ecosystem; all I have ho do is change the filters once a month, and Thea the ball python is pretty clean. Only goes about once a month and slows down in the winter.

The darker (male) one is Thomas James O'Malley III - TJ for short (my friend and ex-roommate named him) and the lighter one (female) is Bandit (my sister named her).

TJ I acquired because a friend had some neighbors who had him but were going to kill him because he was a kitten and kept wanting to play with their toddler.  He's extremely spoiled (thanks to said friend) and likes to be held like a baby.

Bandit was a stray that just showed up one day - she was very young.  A friend and I would regularly BBQ in the backyard and she would come hang out.  We'd let her have some BBQ chicken and she'd eat and then curl up in my lap and go to sleep.  So, after so prodding from my sister (who has three cats herself) I took in the little BBQ loving stray.

I'm not sure.  And I'm not the one to get an unmuzzy response from right now.  Oh well.

That one I can answer -- most definitely we do.

I have a pet betta. His name is Peppers. I've had him about 2 years, and since he has no choice but to put up with me, I feel sorry for him. :) I've also been feeding wild birds for years. Some of my fondest memories are the ones of standing by my mother's wheelchair and watching the cardinals and chickadees flitting around the window. It was one of the few activities she could enjoy. I still hear the cardinal bringing out the morning, and see his silhouette on the blinds throughout the day, and those are the things that mean so much. It's amazing how much life exists in your yard.

I have a cat, too. His name is El Guapo. However, he is much too elusive to capture in a photograph.

I have one dog named Kuma. He's kind of a mutt and the best we can tell he's half Akita and half Husky. He is very pretty about 3/4's of the year but in the spring when he's shedding he looks like he is diseased.

And my boys have a goldfish, used to have two but one day one was...well, he seemed to have learned how to back float. So we had a ceremonial flushing in the bathroom. No matter how you take care of them just seems that some WalMart gold fish aren't long for this world.

She's 1/2 Sheltie 1/2....errr....something else.  I can't remember!  I know that they're small and curly, but not poodles.  Anyway, she's really sweet and great with our kid.

Haha about the elephantine nature of our dog.  She's actually only about 20 lbs, but my husband has a thing about naming dogs after other animals (our other dog was a Border Collie named Mouse.)

Runfrommylife - Huge hugs!  Putting down our Border Collie (Mouse) was just terrible.  You know it's the right thing to do to end their suffering, but it's absolutely gut wrenching to lose them.

I just had to wipe all of the stuff off of my hard drive because my laptop had a virus, so I don't have a lot of pictures saved any more, but here is an old one that I found in my photobucket account.  This is Ellie when she was about 6 months old.  Also, I asked my husband, and he reminded me that her "other half" is Bichon Frise.

Norway has rules regarding the ownership of most reptiles, and I am not particularly fond of them, anyway. Pets should be cuddly.

Hmm, right. I remember reading something like that. I have found my python, Thea, to be quite cuddly. She loves to sit with me at the computer and just chill around my shoulders. Usually, the only thing I have to worry about is her getting tangled in my hair. XD I think Ball Pythons are legal, I'd have to check, but they are a small, very laid back snake. :) I've had Thea for almost three years now.

I have two dogs at home with my parents. Both are pit bull mixes which I think they are the best, such loyal dogs. I have like 5 cats that live with my mom, its hard to keep count because they are mostly outside cats. And I have one amazing awesome dog named Leo that lives with me and my roommates at college. I go back and forth between thinking he is the smartest dog or the dumbest, either way he has a personality

I had a why didn't I know that moment yesterday.
Apparently our iconic Aus cattle dog breed was produced by crossing with dingoes.

QuoteThe Australian Cattle Dog  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Cattle_Dog)(ACD or Cattle Dog) is a breed of herding dog originally developed in Australia for droving cattle over long distances across rough terrain.
QuoteThomas Hall crossed his Drovers Dogs with dingoes he had tamed and by 1840 was satisfied with his resulting progeny.

QuoteThe Australian Dingo is a free-roaming wild dog unique to the continent of Australia, mainly found in the outback. Its original ancestors are thought to have arrived with humans from southeast Asia thousands of years ago, when dogs were still relatively undomesticated and closer to their wild Asian gray wolf parent species, Canis lupus. Since then, living largely apart from people and other dogs, together with the demands of Australian ecology, has caused them to develop features and instincts that distinguish them from all other canines. Dingoes have maintained ancient characteristics that unite them, along with other primitive dogs, into a taxon named after them, Canis lupus dingo, and has separated them from the domestic dog, Canis lupus familiaris.

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F9%2F98%2FDingo_walking.jpg%2F250px-Dingo_walking.jpg&hash=b8697513bd33962d36975d2a749f5d25f9d49504)

So our dog a Jack Russel / Cattle Dog cross has ancestors that walked the continent a long long time ago.

Awwww, your dog is too cute.

My husband had a certain kind of dog growing up that was also crossed with dingos.  I'm trying to remember the name f the breed - it wasn't an Aus Cattle Dog, something else.  Anyway, his whole family liked these dogs, and there were three of them at one time - his family's, his aunt's, and his grandma's.  In honor of their heritage, they were named Addy (short for Adelaide), Ozzie, and Sydney.  Addy (husband's dog) was the only one left by the time I joined the family.  She was a very sweet old girl.  I wish I could remember the name of the breed.  I'll have to ask hubby when I get home tonight.

Asmo - You like that?  I think I've commited myself to using Oh My Asmo from now on.  I like it much better than Oh My God, given that you actually exist and so far have not proven yourself to be nearly as objectionable as the Christian God.   ;D ;D

Blossom is adorable!

My cat has a VERY odd shoe fetish. Men's shoes, specifically. Whenever someone leaves their shoes at the door, she'll run over, bury her head right in the shoe, sniff it up and down, love it alllll up by rubbing her head all over, and then she'll plunk herself down right on top of it and guard it.  :D

The calico cat that I posted about last page will lay on anything that is black. It doesn't matter if it is clothing, bags, or furniture. If it's black, she claims it for herself.

Ladies, your cats are adorable.  When I was in college I had an all black cat named Persephone that used to love to crawl up my pant legs if I was laying on the couch or on the floor.  That's back before the skinny jeans craze, obvs,

Yes, they are extremely snuggly dogs when they get to know you. She is pretty shy with strangers though, but I think that also has to do with her being the runt of the litter.

He actually doesn't drool. We give them water through a bottle and that helps keep them from drooling so much. He doesn't drool at all.

I've got two cats-BOB (Big Orange Buddy) and Dr. Catastrophe.  BOB is very chill and affectionate, but the Dr has her PhD in being a jerkface.  She's mildly evil.  ;)

That's so funny, I used to have an orange cat named BOB for the same reason. It's a good name. :D

I have too many pets. It was mostly the merging of pets when my husband and I were dating and moved in together, but I have always been an animal lover and I grew up in a household with a lot of pets. We have three cats and two dogs (a basset hound and a lemon beagle mix.) Five pets is a lot of work, especially for someone like me that requires a clean and tidy home, but they are completely worth it. Love them to pieces.

That's an interesting combination. Given that beagles and pugs are notorious gluttons I would think it'll put on weight at the drop of a hat. What's his name?

I actually like them too. All the ones I've 'known' personally have been sweet dogs. That said, when I was about 10 years old, one of them chased my mom all the way down the street biting her winter boots as she ran. It was quite a sight, and a mistake on her part. Apparently saying "shut up, you big dummy" to a barking dobie hurts their feelings...  :D

We have (while I have bought all of them, it is considered the family pets):
- The required dog, a small Schnauzer
- Two cats (animal care cases)
- 3 Chickens (fresh eggs daily ... mostly)
- 3 Ducks (Love the ducklings)
- 10 ducklings (the eggs were hatched by the chickens and they are looking after the ducklings)
- I have a number of fish, converted my swimming pool into a fishpond.

This reminds me of an incident that happened a few years back. There's a posh town a little way away from us next to a river not known for flooding. It flooded. Over £100,000 worth of prize Koi Carp swam out to freedom from one chaps garden pond, he was not a happy bunny!

Sometime in the next week or two, my kiddo and I are going down to the petstore because she wants her very own pet, so we've decided on goldfish. We'll get either the fantail (gold) and/or the Blackmoor (black), and get at least 2 so that they have company. Or as A puts it, "so they can play tag together". The ones I described look like this:

(https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.petgoldfish.net%2Ffile%2Ffantail-blackmoor-goldfish.jpg&hash=2273bb2c22decabf424d6de54d25a00d8925a78f)

I think she's at the right age for a couple of fish. She'll learn to feed them, care for them, and when they go belly up (sorry, but they do, lol) she'll see death as a normal natural process too. I do hope she gets to enjoy them for a while though, she's begged for them every time we've walked to the petstore 'just to look'. :) She doesn't know we're going to get them yet. Should be exciting.  ;D

*Edited to add, they are also much hardier, and live longer than goldfish.

I had a beta (quite a few actually, as my mother would keep reminding me at the time because I would sometimes forget to clean their aquariums). Countless hours amusing myself by putting a mirror in front of them and seeing how they reacted to it. Some would tire quicker than others. ::)

Well, Captain here is a very spoiled fish. He lives in my lizard's 55 gallon tank that is 2/5 land and 3/5 water with the water portion having a heater, a waterfall filter, and live plants for him to hide in. He is actually pretty smart as well. He has learned that if he comes to the front of the tank and swims in his little cave that he gets food.

My kiddo's the proud new owner of 4 new orange and white fantail goldfish.  ;D She got them for her 4th birthday, and she was delighted to pick them out. She named them Swimmy, Finny, Fanny, and Taily.   :D

My cat ADORES the fish. We keep some light mesh around the top of the bowl that lets in plenty of air; if we didn't, the cat would play 'bobbing for fishies'.

Yes. When General Asmo goes to war, he shall command his Horde(tm) from the back of one of those. Armoured and equipped with lazers, of course.  :D

Cam the Horde(tm) ride them too, and if so, can I join the Horde(tm) and get one?  I really want one now.  They look shaggy and wonderful!

The officers in The Horde(tm) may have mounts, yes. Only without lazers. Conventional gunpowder attachments are, however, available.

Has to compensate for the lack of fearsome fangs the dogs have with more lazers, you see...

I am a dog guy. I have two Australian Shepherds who are unemployed because we have no sheep or other cattle to herd. A few months back we lost his majesty, Teddy. He was a marvelous Bernese Mountain dog. He got along well with the Aussies.

My patio (central Florida) has lizards a plenty. They are common in this part of the world. They do no harm, grow to about 6 inches long, are semi tame, and fun to watch. The dogs ignore them completely. Sometimes there are a dozen of them in view at the same time.

For real serious lizards, we have an inhabited gulf coast island that has a very serious problem with Monitor Lizards. Those dudes get to be four feet long, they are vicious predators that will kill anything that they can overwhelm. Our Everglades is over run with Burmese Pythons. These snakes can grow to 15 or more feet long and weigh more than 200 pounds. They can, and do, kill and eat alligators. Their main sustenance is wildlife like racoons, armadillos, deer, or whatever is unlucky enough to cross their path.

The Monitors and The Pythons have outpaced all efforts to eradicate or even to diminish their numbers. Neither are native to this country. They were introduced to our ecosystem when people had them as pets and grew tired of them. The pet owners kindly, but ill advisedly, released them into the wild. Now we have an epidemic of bad assed creatures that we can not get rid of. Estimates of the Python population run into the thousands. It seems that they are vey prolific. Not to worry if you come to vacation here. You will not be tramping around the Everglades where the snakes abide.

My wife and I have a crazy cat family...

Oldest Cat: Cinnamon
-Kind of a light orangey-brown-tan sort of colour, striped, short hair.
-Mildly overweight.
-Loving, but only on his terms...touch him when he doesn't want it, you've open pandora's box.
-If he's lying on his back, looking at your with loving eyes, as if he wants his tummy rubbed, IT'S A TRAP.

Middle Cat: Misty
-Light and dark grey, thick stripes, with bits of light brown throughout, mid-length to long hair.
-More than mildly overweight...but her fur tends to make her look more stocky than she is.
-Very loving and needy, with a mild mood disorder, but she does not like to be carried.
-Her fur is pristine, and chunky...when she wants to cool off, she lies on her back and stretches out her legs.

Youngest Cat: Zoe
-Typical black and brown tabby cat, she is only 1 year old, and still very kitten-like.
-Very petite and slender, frisky, but quite well behaved.
-Very loving, at least toward my wife, she liked to sleep in the hood of her sweatshirts when she was smaller.
-Takes very opportunity to escape the human abode...she's a born wild cat.

Hope you like my descriptions :)

No real pets. Had a terrapin which went missing. Some fish that died. A chicken that was quite delicious.

And I foresee a lot of mice and monkeys in my future (I'm into neuroscience).

Mobility issues or an injury, perhaps. Besides that, no.

That possibility crossed my mind, but my first assumption was to think this was more for the convenience of the owner or as a gimmick.
I was out last weekend, and we saw a couple dressed up in very nice evening clothes (Fur coats, hats, etc...)walking around, and the woman had a small dog she was carrying around as if it was nothing more than an accessory to her outfit, like a small clutch purse.

I wouldn't even use that for most mobility problems.  All the legs are just hanging.  A stroller or wagon would work better in most cases.

You can thank Paris Hilton for the dogs as accessories craze.  Not that she started it, but she definitely made it a bazillion times worse.

My beautiful German Shepard (female, 13 years old):

For some reason it opens in a small screen, the 'full screen' button works, though.

You can notice her hind legs are already atrophied, especially in the second video.  Her situation has worsened considerably since these were filmed, she can barely maintain enough muscle tension in her shoulders to stay in that position (she keeps falling to her side), and she is no longer urinating without somebody pressing her underbelly. I bought a child's mattress for her but she has bed wounds on both sides.

The vet comes by this afternoon, and while part of me does not want to hear she should be put down, an even bigger part of me doesn't want to see her suffer anymore.

So sorry to hear that, but I agree with you that one does not want to see them suffer. Some pets are like one's children. I certainly love my little Lulu as much as any human child.

Slver, you suffer the inevitable dortow of oet owners, I have watched two good friends go through this four times each.

I only ever had one cat, Oppy, a real rogue, but had to give him up in moving. My late sister took him in, along with her other three cats and a real dope of a dog. Oppy never quite managed to get the idea that Rose's old queen cat was the family boss, no matter how many times she beat him up.

He died of kidney failure in the end, purring and seeking strokes and scratches to the last. I was not there but the kids told me all about it.

I know a little of the sorrow.

The vet had a look at her and said that while she is deteriorating physically and her bed sores are causing her some discomfort he thinks euthanasia is still not necessary. Her instinct is still to survive, since she's still eating and drinking water. She's still lucid and alert, her eyes were darting all over when the vet was examining her - she would look at us, then at him, then at us, as if to ask 'what the hell is going on? Who is this human?'

I'm in a dilemma. Like I said before I don't want to put her down, but on the other hand don't want to see her suffer either. The vet recommended euthanasia only when she stopped eating and drinking, but I don't know.

Her bed sores are mostly what are worrying me, they very quickly became open wounds on both sides of her hip where the head of her femur is located, even though we turn her over frequently and she's always lying on a mattress, never on the floor. We bought a veterinary cocktail of insecticide/antisepsis/epithelial growth stimulator/fly repellent, but one of her wounds became infested with maggots anyway. We gave her a pill to purge the maggots and continued to apply the medication and now the wounds are finally healing. The vet said that they will always cause her pain though, since she's losing the muscle and fat that previously cushioned that area, being left with only skin over bone.

She still has some fight left in her though, maybe I should respect that? Go along with what the vet said and only euthanise her when she finally enters the stage when she resigns herself to death and stops eating and drinking?

It's like a part of my brain orders me not to have her killed. To not allow it. It brings back memories of when I found her in a run-down pet store, a three month old poorly treated, traumatised, puppy, still floppy-eared and covered in her own poop, in a cage along with two other pups. My mother bargained with the vendor and bought what looked like the healthiest  - the most playful - of the three.

Flash forward to when I moved south. She was around 1.5 years old at the time. I left her for 3 months in a pet hotel/farmhouse while looking for a home before driving 2.200 km back up with my mother and sister to get her. We were not impressed with the way airlines treated live cargo and so decided to go through with what many called an absurdity. She refused to leave the car on the drive back down and slept all through the trip like she hadn't slept in years (it probably helped that we traveled all through the night so that she she didn't overheat ;) ).

She is family, and will leave a gaping hole in my life when she is gone.

(Sorry for the extensive text, and if you read all of it, thank you for your time.)

It's very hard to decide between quality of life vs. quantity of life, esp. when you have to make the decision for someone who can't tell you what they'd want.  All I can go with is the fairly useless advice to follow your instincts.  No matter what you do, it's going to be painful and you'll be second-guessing yourself afterwards.

There's a spectrum when it comes to euthanasia. On one end, you have never euthanize, ever, all beings should have a natural death. On the other, you have the idea that no animal should experience any level of pain, ever, and no invasive procedure, long recovery time or chronic issue should ever be endured. Is better for them to die than deal with this regardless of prognosis. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, and where exactly depends on the animal as well as the owner. Almost everyone told me to euthanize my first Husky, who had a massive tumor on his liver. But he wanted to go on walks, run agility, play with me and wrestle with his dog friends... he had sore days and didn't eat well but he always had sore days and never ate well. I didn't think it right to end that, even if it may end badly, soon (tumors of this nature typically hemorrhage). My girl now... Well, she once woke me up to cuddle her because she had a tummy ache. I don't suspect she'll want to shove through that sort of thing the way he did, if it comes to that.

I think you will have more clarity when the time is really right, but based on what you're writing I don't think any time is truly wrong. I assume she has DM? Which thankfully doesn't hurt, so it becomes more about all the garbage DM causes and how the two of you are coping with that.

The vet thinks she has degenerative myelopathy, but we didn't perform any tests to know for sure. Added to that she also has hip dysplasia, which could be causing her pain? The vet suggested against giving her anti-inflammatory medication because it could give her diarrhea, and she doesn't like to feel dirty so she eats her faeces if we don't remove them fast enough (which probably causes us more distress than it does her). We do give her painkillers though, especially when it's night and we rarely wake up to turn her over. She complains a lot, but then again she always was a frequent whimperer (I'm am told it is a German Shepherd thing).

I'm somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, I don't believe a life should be ended at the first signs of discomfort or suffering, or even when the prognosis is bad and the animal is in the early stages of the disease, but also think it's the merciful thing to do when the animal is clearly suffering a lot, and constantly.

It's tough. We can't leave her unattended for more than a few hours at a time, and have to constantly cover the wounds on her hip so that she doesn't picking at the wound and to keep flies from depositing their eggs. She also has to be turned over frequently.

Silver, euthanasia is not cruel.  When the time comes, it is merciful and is the ultimate act of love and compassion.  With someone as caring as you are, the decision is heart rending.  According to your description of the symptoms, the time is here.

I make these remarks mindful of the four boxes of ashes near my writing station. They are the cremated remains of furry creatures who have given me joy and love and companionship and unquestioned loyalty.  I am tearful as I type this. Tearful for my own lost companions and also tearful for the terrible decision that you must make.

I'm sorry to hear this xSP,...sorry for your loss, sorry for your poor doggy, and sorry you are sad.

Take care.

Neither of us believe in heaven but I want desperately to believe in the rainbow Bridge. Our best ever friends are hopefully there.   I hope this poem might comfort you a little bit.....

I'm so sorry, my family recently had to put a beloved dog down, too. It was recommended by the vet that it had to be done. I couldn't be there to say goodbye to her, because I had just returned back to my college town from Thanksgiving Break.

It breaks my heart that I didn't get to say goodbye to her... I was there for her last days, but not the last day or moment itself.

She's gone. I must have lived a sheltered life, as I haven't felt this amount of grief in a long time.

I'm so sorry, unfortunately the intense grief is normal.  You won't get over it, but eventually you'll learn to live with it.

Thanks guys, sharing this has helped me cope. Today is a little easier.

Sometimes I still hear her whimper, not unlike when someone thinks they hear their phone ringing. She would whimper for everything, when she wanted to drink or eat, when she wasn't feeling comfortable or when she just seemed to want someone to stay with her.

xSP,  I'm terribly sorry for the pain you are feeling. It makes me sad too, reading through all of these comments. Such a hard decision, full of doubts and waiting to see....
Hang in there.

euthanasia is a sensitive topic when it comes to pets.

i have a long history of much-loved animals. at least fifteen dogs, a dozen or so named cats, (maybe fifty unnamed) currently half a dozen goats, a donkey, two more dogs, and maybe twenty cats, of which only five or six have individual names.

countless small mammals. field mice, harvest mice, pocket mice, kangaroo rats, gerbils, hamsters, plus lizards, snakes, birds, fish, who knows what else.

i don't take pets to a vet anymore when they're beyond help. i shoot them under an elm tree and bury them there myself. the elm currently has six dogs under it, twenty seven years of them. vets are places where animals are stressed and bewildered. when i took the last two dogs there, they were frightened, because the place smelled like fear and death. and they died there. i won't put them through that anymore.

now i carry them out and lay them down in the flowers, then just put a quiet bullet through their heads. the kids help me bury them. it's not a solution for everybody, but it works for us.

This is my pet monkey. He's a bit mentally challenged. I was told, when he was young, to put him down, as his severely dimished mental capacities would gravely limit his capabilities. But, I just couldn't, he's just too damn cute.
