Just listening to a version of John Osbourne's "Luther", about his earlier days, on BBC Radio 4. Came in part way through to hear the spiel by an indulgence seller, how he had the authority to issue letters that will forgive past sins, even all future sins, to save suffering in hell for seven years for each one. For a price . . . Got no money? Give the jacket off your back then.
Not just an ideoligical con but a moral and criminal one as well. One that Christian churches are still perpetuating in one form or another.
