Title: Hello from England
Post by: Tank on May 06, 2010, 07:49:33 PM
Hi

Just one question to start! Are there many fundies around here?

Hi Tank!

We have a few theists currently posting, but no fundies recently as far as I can tell.

 Welcome to the forum.  :)

 Welcome to the forum.  :D

Being English your location 'DTW' does not mean much, where would that be?

I live about half way up the UK in Leeds, there is a Tank factory not far away, hence my username.

Is there a potted history of the origins of this place which I could read?

The 'DFW' stands for the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas, which by a small stretch, includes my place of residence in Denton (aka little d). I suppose I could put 'DFW, TX' on there for clarification, but lately I've been changing all my other online profiles to be more specific. Just hadn't gotten around to updating this one yet.  :)

I'm not sure about the history, I haven't seen anything like that here. Mostly we just jump in to whatever discussions we find interesting and start posting. It helps to read a few first, to get a feel for the social atmosphere, but just posting and reading the replies is the fastest way to get to know the people here.

Oh, fundies.  I've also heard them called cake eaters on occasion.  I think we scare those types, for the most part.

Welcome to HAF.

Ah! I understand now. In my experience DFW tends to have quite a high concentration of atheists when compared to the rest of Texas, is that the case?

I've found a Christian 'pj' and it's like home from home (https://www.happyatheistforum.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg34.imageshack.us%2Fimg34%2F2438%2Fheheoc.gif&hash=50cf1131f6316b9f48965cce1bfe1877dc8f90e7)

Welcome, Tank. Now we have a "Tank" and a "Tanker" on the forum. Hope we don't mix you two up!
We get fundamentalists from time to time. It's difficult to find common ground for discussion. And by fundie, we get fundie from more than just christianity, btw. We do our best to live up to the forum name, but as you know, the tendency for intolerance and circular logic that come with the fundie mindset wears on even the most patient folks here.

Yes! I spotted Tanker. I've dropped him a PM and if he's concerned I'll change my user name to Archer.

I noticed the 'No Preaching' rule. Would that tend to be the fundie nemesis or do they just give up in the end?

 :hmm:  Why 'cake eaters'?

I have no idea.  It might be a local colloquialism.  My boyfriend's parents have always referred to them as cake eaters.

It would seem so. All the ones I know in person are in Denton, of course. It's a very different environment from Dallas and the surrounding areas. Denton's kind of like a small town that happens to have two universities and a relatively large (and rapidly growing) population. I live well in the ghetto.  :D

What sort of place is Leeds? I've heard of it, I think.

Leeds is a reasonably large city with a large University, lots of financial businesses and a history of manufacturing. In mid-Victorian times it was the largest producer of woollen cloth on earth, but I'm not old enough to remember that!

The wiki entry is a good place to start http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds)

Quote from: "Tanker"Hello Tank and welcome to the forum. Are  you an armor crewman? Or just a tank lover?
Neither really. Although I'm into all things military as an arm chair user. I was quite large at school and played rugby and tended to just barge through the opposition, hence the nick name of Tank. I also live near the Vickers tank factory at Barnbow in Leeds which was another reason the name came to mind.

Do you have a background on the real thing?

I was an Abrams tanker for 5 years. I have since left the Army but at the time I joined this forum I was still in an not feeling particularly creative so I chose Tanker.

Have you written about your experiences here or elsewhere? I must confess to being a sucker for the experiences of people who have 'been there and done it'. I've just finish reading Bob Ballards account of finding the wreck of the Bismark and it really comes to life due to the accounts of the survivors of the battles.

Mostly we get frustrated, they repeat themselves endlessly, refuse to learn anything (probably because satan uses us to try to trick them), we all just watch the threads disintegrate, someone gets banned, or we just ignore them.

By the way, former U.S. Army here, but didn't drive tanks. I suppose my nickname, if based on the Army, would be "rotorhead".  :)

Also, small world coincidence...I just finished a two-day stint doing presentations and round table discussions on Multiple Myeloma with a gentleman from Leeds (well, he grew up in Leeds, but lives in Denver, Colorado now).

Very familiar with this scenario. I will endeavour not to get banned  :) [/quote]
Once read Snake Pilot (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Snake-Pilot-Flying-Helicopter-Vietnam/dp/1574886118/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273221957&sr=1-4) was thrilling and scary by turns. What did you fly? Did you get anywhere exotic?

As you say, it's a small world. I've lived in Leeds since '86 but lived in and south of London. I was born in Worthing a sleepy little retirement resort on the south coast of England. If I had been any further south I would have been French

Hi

Well not being a great football fan the Leeds situation doesn't worry me, although the team just got a guaranteed promotion for next year, which I gather is a good thing. I tend to follow F1 Grand Prix myself, McLaren being the team I have followed of late having been a Williams fan in their hay day.

Definitely! My son redesigned part of the cars suspension during the last summer break of his Mech Eng masters the year before last year. It was accepted for production before the credit crunch but as the redesign just saved weight and the titanium parts would have been much more expensive they never went onto the car. He worked there for 6 weeks, lucky bugger!

Quote from: "SSY"Exactly, I want lewis to build an enduring legacy, like Senna or Stewart, he needs to start building those championships early, Jenson's time has passed, he will never achieve true greatness now.
I see what your saying. I would like to see Jenson get this one back-to-back on his last one as Lewis needs to mature a bit and as they appear to get on pretty well I think Jenson will be a good influence on him.

No... Hopefully I'll go back to school this fall. If not, I'll probably have to get a job which is really hard to get when you're under 18.

Well, I of course could have done better in 8th to 10th grade.
And I could have applied to get into more schools, and I thought I did, but turns out I only applied to get into two schools.  :sigh:
