Single Electron Reader Opens Path for Quantum Computing

Quote
ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2010) — A team led by engineers and physicists at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, have developed one of the key building blocks needed to make a quantum computer using silicon: a "single electron reader."

   Australians doing science! FTW!

Joking aside. The single electron-bit (ebit) has been a goal of material and computing science for as long as I can remember. Mainly because it has been perceived as a fundamental limit to how small you can make a memory device. At the moment the support circuitry on the chip makes the ebit memory cell way bigger than that of a conventional dynamic RAM cell but the fact that the principals are now know will spur on development again.

If this leads to artificial intelligence that wipes humanity off the planet...

Bumping this one up to date a bit, to where quantum computing is now a reality. You may be quite routinely talking to a quantum computer in the not too distant future.

Tomorrow is precious, don't ruin it by fouling up today.
