I just read this article and am spitting nails. Fuck the pope! He's an evil little git amongst a gang of evil little gits supporting an evil-little-git-indoctrination programme. Firstly, where the hell does he get off telling us how to run our affairs? He's not even a head of state! He's just the head of a church. He definitely isn't qualified to judge us on our rules, especially after saying insidious stuff like:

"Your country (the UK) is well-known for its firm commitment to equality of opportunity for all members of society. Yet, as you have rightly pointed out, the effect of some of the legislation designed to achieve this goal has been to impose unjust limitations on the freedom of religious communities to act in accordance with their beliefs. In some respects it actually violates the natural law upon which the equality of all human beings is grounded and by which it is guaranteed."

Essentially he's saying:
"Equality of opportunity is fine and dandy unless you are gay and from a different religion... Our beliefs give us the right to discriminate against entire portions of the human population unchallenged. I stand by this right to tell other nations how to police their gays because a non-provable invisible being told me I could, so fuck you!"

The pope is an evil bastard. Oh yeah, and so is Ann Widdecombe.. She's a contemptible little crone.  :upset:

That made me fly off the handle for a bit and I'm an American!  I really dislike the pope, though, and this is a grand example why.  In the same statement he's acknowledging the UK as a fair place, and then asking the UK not to be a fair place.  The religious spokesmen in the article seem to only focus on the eventuality that a gay person may be hired by a church and thus, the bill should not be passed.  Basically, they endorse equality...as long as religious groups don't have to adhere to the same rules as everyone else.

If a religious group is barred from discriminating, it's infringing on their religious rights?  Seriously?  Are people so willing to admit that discrimination is that important to their religion?  Oh, I forgot, THEY'RE not discriminating, it's GOD who makes the rules.  Lack of accountability FTW!

What a shit. I bet that if decided not to hire a Catholic, because I believe them to be nuts, then the pope would invoke the equality bill faster than a priest in a playground. I forget which one, but one of the former cabinet ministers was a member of Opus Dei, being catholic is scary enough, but being such a hardcore catholic that you shun others is down right terrifying, iirc she had a fairly senior position as well.

Wow, i'll try to find out who that was. I get a bit freaked out when i hear about MP's being members of secret societies - especially if in conjunction with hardcore religion.

Ruth Kelly, she was Transport, Women and equality, Communities and Local Government and lastly, Education and skills. Notably, while she was in charge of education, she sent her kids to a Catholic primary school, and one of her kids to a (very expensive) preparatory school (a school specialising in children who will go into private education), sadly, this was very indicative of her tenure as Education minister. Also, being Catholic, it will not come as a surprise that she failed in spectacular fashion to help gay rights, even voting against gay adoption rights. Anyway, sorry for the derail, though it is interesting that for us, one fundie in the government is a cause for concern, for the yanks on here, I imagine only having one religious nutter would be heaven!

Aha! Why am i not surprised? She always came across as a smug, contemptible, self-satisfied douche.
