When I visited my oldest brother and parents (who were staying with his family), I held back at first. Then the quips started to get more frequent and crazy, from how our socialist government is ruining everything, trying to say that Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand is more than a piece of shit, and climate change denial ridiculousness. So I stopped holding back and directly talked about what they said. I kept making jokes, but making sure not to let the BS go. It only lasted about 2.5 hours, but it felt much longer. Some things my parents and brother said include, "the Mexicans," "good for Shkreli to raise the price of the AIDS drug," "if you're not 100% conservative, then you're a liberal destroying the country," and "Scalia is the last hope this country has."

But it was fun showing them how their supposed conservative heroes are doing the very things they try to blame on "the liberals," from taking freedoms to hurting the economy.

Davin I do hope that you were able to make a dent in the ultra conservative armor of your relatives.

I have been unable to figure out why the word "socialism" has been anathema to some of our citizens.  They also misinterpret words like "theory" in its scientific context, and persist in believing in conspiracy "theories" while denying iron clad evidence of climate change.

Dwight Eisenhower was one of our more highly respected presidents but in retrospect, he must have been the embodiment of socialist endeavor because under his administration we built an interstate highway system using federal money which was clearly a socialist plot.  Under FDR we were assailed by another socialist plot which became known as Social Security. Congress also funnels loads of money to universities to be used for the purpose of research and development into such things as cancer studies, agricultural developement, animal husbandry, potable water supply enlightenments, and a few other hateful socialist exercises.  Then there is the FAA that keeps the aviation industry intact and operable, Then there is NOAA the corrupt government outfit who monitors hurricanes and tornadoes and manages to give early warnings to affected areas and save countless lives.  Damned socialists! The US Geodetic survey makes it possible to keep commercial shipping and pleasure boating reasonably safe, TVA let a whole bunch of people have electricity, perish the socialistic thought.  The US coast Guard maintains  aids to navigation, interdict drug smugglers, and conduct frequent and dangerous air/sea and sea/sea rescues. Then there is the US forestry service, the national Park system, the FBI, CIA, the.... need we continue our indictment of all those other nefarious socialist outfits?

Of course Obama is a communist, Muslim, Kenyan ( I hesitate to use the N word)  who is totally unqualified to be our POTUS. Yeah right! He ain't doing too badly when compared to his predecessor. Meanwhile an individual with a Gargantuan ego, who has no use for fact, is our leading...by far.........potential nominee for president. Did I mention that he is a shit for brains bully with funny hair?  Pray tell why so much of our citizenry is so far out in right field that they will have to get a second ticket to even get into the ball park?  That is the big question.

Help, I'm waiting to exhale.

By their definition he was. Eisenhower also was very aware of the dangers of the military industrial complex and tried to warn the country about it, which would probably qualify as capitulation today. Hell, they fetishize Ronald Reagan so much, yet he would never be elected today.
The Republicans have spent the last 30 years catering to angry racist white men with guns and evangelical Christians. This is the end result. Trump is the embodiment of the base they catered to but didn't expect to actually vote for. My hope is that it breaks the party and we end up with a legit opposition formed from the ashes.

That is a worthy hope. The problem is that though the Republican establishment has pretty much lost control of the more extremist elements of their party, the party as a whole has been very successful in statewide and local elections. This is at least partly due to the creation of safe seats through gerrymandering. While plenty of those safe seats have been lost by the establishment to Tea Party challengers, they're still nominally Republican. To me, it seems like the Tea Party wing is more inclined to continue taking over the party, rather than actually splitting it.

When I mentioned that I don't really have any problems with my family and religion, I kind of forgot that my brother-in-law wants to send my nephew to a private Christian school. Oh, I've had to bite my tongue on that one!

Thankfully, the only thing religious that got brought up yesterday was my sister's disdain for Jehovah's Witnesses. She called them a cult, but the conversation never really went further than that.

But if anyone's going to start anything it's those two. >.<

Me too. Luckily I'm only here until Monday. Home is 1100 kms away. I'll only be here for a week total and I don't think I could take more than that. ::)

Physical therapy is killing me. I've only been twice, but my knee is as swollen and painful as it was three weeks after my injury. It has been over 11 weeks now since I hurt my knee.

I've been through it before, but it never set me back like this. I was able to stand for a few minutes, keeping most of my weight on my left leg and using my right one for balance. Now I no longer can. I also back to debating with myself whether or not I need to go to the toilet badly enough to put up with the pain of standing and inching myself to the bathroom while putting as much weight on my arms as they can stand. Even with pain medication, I'm hardly able to sleep. I am very, very grumpy.

Well I seem to be starting the new year off right this time. The car broke down coming off the ferry last night and I had to load the beast on my brother's trailer in between boats using a come-a-long, tearing my hands to pieces in the process. Without wheels I missed a day of work trying to get it running again, and have improved from not running at all to what GM apparently calls the "phantom stall" meaning the car isn't driveable on the highway.

If I'm lucky it's the MAF sensor that I just replaced and still under warranty. A little unlucky would mean an O2 sensor which is fairly cheap and not tooooo bad to install. Unlucky could mean either the cam position sensor, meaning I'd have to partially dissasemble the engine. Royally screwed would be the crank position sensor. To replace that the harmonic balancer needs to be removed THROUGH the passenger side wheel well.  >:(

What did you do to get it part-running?

Was going to say this to you yesterday but forgot, I'll probably forget again so before I do....do you think it has anything to do with hitting the deer?

Replaced the plugs and tried a large dose of fuel treatment. It was acting like there was water in the fuel system and getting it started and running the piss out of it cleared that up but the stall came back.
