I think I'm going to try to preserve it. I'll wait for a cold day and try to cut it away from the wall.

Why not paint it with some thin varnish a few times before you try and remove it? That will strengthen it and bring out the structure. It could make a beautiful ornament.
I'm considering that. It might need to be fairly thick to not saturate the nest and cause damage. Some spray on clearcoat followed by an epoxy coating might do the trick.

Have you considered using one of those reach cgrabber  things to place some dry ice under the nest pod?  Freezing the little bastards could be an option until you can coat the pod with varnish, laquer, or shellac (or cyanide).........paying special attention to plugging the exit hole with some Bondo or other bulletproof stickum.  Attack them at night when their activity is at its minimum.

I think that the coming cold will do the trick. The more I think about this the less I want to hurt these hornets. I just need them out of that room. If I can preserve the nest that'd be more of a bonus.

I was thinking you'd want to see the outside of the nest? Or are you going to try to show the inside?

Possibly both. A guy I work with had a neat idea - lampshade.

A lampshade would be cool. Are wasps nests flammable though?

Probably, but a thick enough coating and led bulbs should mitigate any fire risk.

Thank you both. I find it interesting that the sky in cooler weather tends more towards orange and purple at sunset rather than the reds and blues during summer. I suspect it has something to do with the humidity but can't say for certain.
