So as not to dwell too much on my impending hip replacement, I have found a way to distract myself. I've started playing with ways to use the HAF fish emblem or logo to make objects. Here are some examples:
Earring in gold. Could perhaps be a bit smaller for daytime wear.

This is usually the first, concept stage when I design stuff, just to get the look right. Then after that I would work out the practical construction details. This is just me playing around - not really a serious attempt to design anything practical. The eye would present a major challenge to maintain the "floating" look if I had to make a real pin.

Yeah, things like that eye are a real pain! I have resorted to fine, slightly random, wires from a "pupil" to an "orbit" as supports. Can look weird though!
Won't work here anyway, no orbit.

If I were to actually make this as a piece of jewellery, I would consider a backing of a thin sheet of ruby sapphire. I played with rods of this amazing stuff when I was making jewellery as a hobby. It looks like colourless glass, but I could heat it to white hot in a torch without melting it.

Yes, that would be a possibility. That's the beauty of using a program like Cinema 4D to design things. It is so easy to try out ideas and then render them photo-realistically. Like this bit of surreal craziness:

Yes, the reason is that I was using a single light source, not global illumination, to save render time. I usually do that when I am trying out different things and want a fast result. Render times with global illumination are much longer. I will do one to show the difference.

Er, Artuto, "surreal" sort of means "bizarre" - it needs no connection to reality, that is the very essence of that school of art. Look up Salvador Dali!

The HAF logo evolved to have a free floating eye.
Give it another million years and most logos will probably have one.
There's no doubt that logos with a floating eye have evolved revolving around other stars .
I am planning to make some more bizarre variations that will be even further disconnected from reality.

One can obviously spend a long time tweaking the render, but this is just to show what a difference global illumination can make. Here I'm using the natural light coming in through a window. The shadows are much softer and more natural. The down side is that the rendering time was almost 10 minutes, while the earlier one took about 11 seconds.

Technically the ear rings can be done if they are held together by a clear pane. Maybe the same with the pendant. The needle would have to be part of the eye to be uh...unnoticed. But this pen holding thing? Why not just use a coffee mug? BAH

That's because it is a PNG image, with black lines on a transparent background, as requested by my client Tank. It is intended to be pasted it over an existing image to see it properly. I will do one in red, so you should be able to see it.

I like "Rosy". There are so many possibilities for a rainbow PNG; do you have any examples you like? These came up in a Google search.

No, no. Please don't see this as a "competition". I wouldn't dream of even trying to do anything in Bad Penny's class, let alone to usurp his role as cutlery creator at HAF. I don't have the creative imagination to make cutlery for HAF members - I know my limitations. Have you attempted an improved version of your spoon? I wasn't happy with the bevel.
The horizontal lines in the spoon might be the problem and too few pixels to work with.
I did try filing back the spoon to remove the black lines but it just didn't work out.
I don't think you necessarily need a 3d program to achieve an apparent 3d effect, Photoshop's native layer styles can be effective.
Traditionally forelocks are meant to be tugged you know, not merely touched.

No, I found your version nice enough. Perhaps I should play with it, now that I have your permission (see, humble as ever).
I am much more comfortable working in 3D; it gives me the freedom to try different textures and orientations. I am more at home with it, because I design my jewellery and sculptures in the round in Rhino and Cinema 4D. That means I can turn the object around and see it from all angles. With Photoshop you only have one point of view. I have also been playing with ZBrush on and off for a year now. I've been told it is worth the pain to penetrate its weird user interface. It's very unlike any other Windows program.
I find tugging in public a bit awkward.

I was thinking of making Rosy a rainbow on a clear background rather than a rainbow background. Does that make sense?
You mean the lines of the current image filled in with rainbow colours? Perhaps you could do a rough sketch to show me.
That's exactly what I mean. The current black/red logo done in a rainbow.
Here is an attempt. Not sure how successfully it will scale down to a small image, though. It may end up looking too busy.

Perfect!
Rainbow HAF symbols might appeal to any of our LGBT members. Seems to me that they would be twice damned by the Christian right or other bible thumper types in that case.

They will always find a reason to damn anyone.
Stigmata.
